IRAMS has been field tested by the 3rd Infantry Division’s Aviation Brigade during two rotations at the National Training Center. The Battalion Commander, LTC Williams, and the Battalion S3, MAJ Mendenhall, as well as other pilots from the battalion landed on the IRAMS marking system multiple times during the rotation. The weather during the rotation resulted in brownout conditions that were described by some pilots as the worst they had seen (here in the U.S.) and all reported being able to see the IRAMS markers all the way to the ground. LTC Williams also stated they were able to see the markers in brownout conditions, that IRAMS did increase safety, and that he felt every Aviation unit should have IRAMS.
Other written feedback from testing included statements about IRAMS such as:
- The “Best I’ve Seen” when compared to other LZ marking aids.
- That they would recommend using IRAMS to others.
- That IRAMS would aid in landing in adverse conditions.
- "I landed in a brownout and never lost sight of the panel."
